Dillo World
Crossroads, New Mexico
Dillo World
A man named Duck Miller was riding down a forgotten dirt road near Crossroads, New Mexico, in 1890 when he saw a strange object off in the desert. He drove to the large pile of twisted metal partially buried in the ground. He had no idea what it was. Perhaps a UFO or part of Noah’s Ark. Who knew? It was just a curiosity out in the middle of nowhere. No one gave it much thought. But it was the wreckage of The Great Airship Fish.
Soon the hulking mangled metal frame took on a new life. Mr. Duck believed it was the wreckage of a UFO that resembled a huge armadillo skeleton.
Duck, the perpetual entrepreneur, had an idea: charge tourists to see The Giant Alien Armadillo from Outer Space.
So, with the help of his family, it would become Dillo World. Duck and the Miller clan of three dozen people wrapped the metal frame in chicken wire and shrouds of cloth and coated it with plaster of Paris. It looked like real alien bones.
The venture was very successful. There was so much traffic to the site that the county maintained the dirt road to it to help with tourism.
